McMaster faculty named to list of most influential researchers
November 28, 2023
Sixteen McMaster researchers have been named to Clarivate Analytics’ 2023 list of the world’s most Highly Cited Researchers.
This list recognizes the most influential researchers at universities, research institutes and commercial organizations around the world who have made a significant impact on their fields of research. This impact is determined by the amount of Highly Cited Papers they have published, which are defined as publications that rank in the top one per cent of citations in the researcher’s field over the past decade, according to Web of Science. These papers are then placed alongside a qualitative analysis and expert judgement to determine their standing. Overall, Highly Cited Researchers account for 1 in every 1,000 globally.
The McMaster researchers recognized in this year’s list are:
-
- Eric Brown, Department of Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences
- Jan Brozek, Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence & Impact
- Stuart Connolly, Department of Medicine

Of the sixteen McMaster researchers featured in this year’s list, seven were given a Cross-Field distinction, which identifies researchers that have significant influence across multiple fields. Additionally, both Guyatt and Schünemann were listed twice for their contributions to both Clinical Medicine and Social Sciences.
Canada ranked 6th in the world in this year’s publication with 218 Highly Cited Researchers.
Andy Knights, acting vice-president, research, says McMaster’s performance in the Highly Cited Researchers list reflects the global reach and widespread impact of McMaster’s research expertise.
“From evidence-based medicine to the discovery of the very first viral vectors, McMaster has a proud tradition of producing research with a global impact. This year’s Clarivate Analytics’ ranking highlights the quality and collective impact of the work our researchers carry out every day.”
