Listen Up

For some, live music is hard to enjoy with hearing aids. That’s because live music – especially classical – can be distorted by traditional hearing aids, which are tailored to capture speech sounds and aren’t able to deal with the tone and volume ranges of instruments.

McMaster’s LIVELab collaborated with the Hamilton Philharmonic to test new technology during HPO concerts, hoping to create a better listening experience for those with hearing aids.

McMaster’s LIVELab researchers also used KEMAR – a computerized mannequin equipped with calibrated microphones – for testing different technologies to fix the problem.
