The Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition are hosting Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Rhacel Salazar Parreñas, for a four-month teaching and research visit.

Dr. Salazar Parreñas, who arrived January 12th, is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Southern California and will be at McMaster working on her next book. The work will compare migrant domestic workers in Singapore and the United Arab Emirat, highlighting the vulnerable status of domestic workers in unregulated workspaces.

“I sought a Fulbright at McMaster because the Center for Globalization provides me with an intellectual community that tackles questions of global south to south migration.”, said Salazar Parreñas.

Her current research examines the intersections of human trafficking and labour migration. Her research areas include labour, gender, migration and economic sociology.

Dr. Salazar will be at McMaster University until April 2017. While here she will deliver a guest lecture in “Researching Globalization” (Global Studies 709) as well as a public talk on domestic workers in Dubai, which is scheduled to take place in February 2017.

The Fulbright Program allows U.S. academics and professionals to engage in multi-country, trans-regional teaching and research activity.
